Location: Alder Hey Children’s Hospital
Sector: Site Clearance, Aggregate Supply & Waste Management
Period: 2013 – 2015
Project
Alder Hey in the Park, in Liverpool; the project took 130 weeks to complete and is Laing O’Rourke’s quickest hospital build – 20% faster than any previous project. The 270-bed children’s hospital features more open space inwards, en-suite rooms, and views of the park and green landscaped areas for every child. It also features a giant indoor tree-house, outdoor play decks featuring fish tanks on each of the seven wards, a relaxation garden and interactive screens in patient waiting areas. In fact, the main reason why Alder Hey is so unique is that the children didn’t want the building to look or feel like a hospital at all.
Scope of Works
After a successful tender, CCC has worked on several areas of the new build. At the outset CCC removed 250,000 tonnes of hazardous material from the site, removing it to approved tips throughout the North West. We then supplied recycled and quarried aggregates for the construction phase operating in tight site conditions but always to the deadline.
As a local firm, it was a fantastic achievement to be selected to service one of the biggest construction projects in Liverpool at the time and even more satisfying to be involved in the region’s new children’s hospital.
CCC moved in excess of 3000 loads off the 100,000m2 site to allow any land remediation and assisting construction to begin. Once in the building phase, CCC supplied both recycled and quarried aggregates including MOT, pipe bedding, 6F5, etc. We also supplied the site with a Waste Management solution – providing both 8 and 14 yard and also Roll On Roll Off.
In total CCC were on site for two and a half years
